Coming around a bend

I saw a fawn cross the road.

On fast but unsure new legs

It ran across six lanes

(three eastbound, three west),

Dodging two cars and

Jumping a chain-link fence.

From our smoking steel cages,

We applied brakes and

Gripped steering wheels

As we watched it

Disappear into the trees

On the other side.
